An estimate based on your page size, font, spacing and margins. Your designer’s final layout sets the exact count, so use your finished interior’s page count for your cover.
How many pages is my book?
A printed book holds far more words per page than a manuscript. A typeset 6" x 9" paperback fits around 300 to 350 words per page, while a smaller 5" x 8" book fits around 240. So a 75,000-word novel is roughly 244 pages at 6" x 9" but about 340 pages at 5" x 8".
| Word count | 5.5" x 8.5" | 6" x 9" | Manuscript (double-spaced) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30,000 | about 130 pages | about 114 pages | 120 pages |
| 50,000 | about 200 pages | about 172 pages | 200 pages |
| 75,000 | about 286 pages | about 244 pages | 300 pages |
| 100,000 | about 372 pages | about 318 pages | 400 pages |
These figures assume 11 pt Garamond, 1.35 line spacing, typical margins, 20 chapters and 10 pages of front and back matter. Use the calculator for your exact size, font and layout.
What changes your page count
- Trim size. Bigger pages hold more words. Moving from 5.5" x 8.5" to 6" x 9" can cut 10 to 15% of your pages.
- Font size and spacing. Going from 11 pt to 12 pt adds roughly 15% more pages. Large-print editions often use 14 pt or more.
- Chapters and headings. Each new chapter usually starts on a fresh page, often a right-hand one, which leaves white space.
- Images, tables and lists. Nonfiction with diagrams, worksheets or pull quotes runs longer than plain text.
How the calculator works
It measures the text area left inside your margins, works out how many characters fit on a line for your font and size, and how many lines fit on a page for your line spacing. From that it estimates words per page, then adds chapter openings, images and front and back matter. Fonts differ a lot: Georgia sets about 15% fewer words per page than Garamond at the same size.
It also checks your inside margin against KDP’s minimums: 0.375" up to 150 pages, 0.5" up to 300, 0.625" up to 500, 0.75" up to 700 and 0.875" above that.
How long should a book be?
Common guidelines by word count: under 7,500 words is a short story, 17,500 to 40,000 is a novella, and most full-length novels run 70,000 to 100,000 words. Nonfiction varies widely, but many practical how-to and business books run 40,000 to 60,000 words. Readers care more about value than length, so write as much as the book needs and no more.
Why page count matters for publishing
Your page count sets your spine width, your printing cost and therefore your royalty. It also affects your list price. That’s why your interior should be finalized before your cover is designed. Once you have a page count, try our KDP cover calculator and royalty calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many words are on a page of a book?
A typeset 6" x 9" paperback holds about 300 to 350 words per page at 11 pt. A 5.5" x 8.5" book holds about 290, and a 5" x 8" book about 240. Font, line spacing and margins change this a lot. A double-spaced manuscript page holds about 250 words.
How many pages is 50,000 words?
About 170 pages in a 6" x 9" paperback, about 200 pages at 5.5" x 8.5", and 200 pages as a double-spaced manuscript, with 11 pt type and typical margins.
How many pages is 100,000 words?
About 320 pages in a 6" x 9" paperback and about 370 pages at 5.5" x 8.5", depending on font, size, spacing and chapters.
How long will my audiobook be?
A professional narrator reads about 9,300 words per finished hour, so a 75,000-word book makes an audiobook of roughly 8 hours.
How many words is a novel?
Most full-length novels are 70,000 to 100,000 words. Under 40,000 words is usually called a novella, and under 7,500 words a short story.
Why is my estimate different from my printed proof?
The estimate assumes a standard book layout. Your designer’s choices of font, margins, chapter openings and images all change the final count, so always use the page count of your finished interior file for your cover.
